In the past few months, Italy has witnessed lengthy debates concerning a new anti-discrimination bill due to be passed by the Senate. Named the ‘Zan’ Bill after deputy Alessandro Zan, who proposed it, the bill’s main resolution is to criminalise hate speech. The proposition is to expand an existing law against racial, ethnic or religious discrimination, so that is also covers discrimination based on gender, sexuality and disability.

Earlier this month, a writer and an editor from the Radical took part in the Amiel & Melburn Trust’s annual residential seminar. The Trust’s aims are “to advance public education, learning and knowledge in all aspects of the philosophy of Marxism, the history of socialism, and the working-class movement’. This year, the topic of the seminar was ‘Politics & Culture’, and the various intertwinings and intersections thereof. LET’S TALK ABOUT UKIP

I am loathe to further add to the column inches that have been devoted to UKIP. The problem is that we haven’t yet spent enough time talking about them.

This might seem a bizarre assertion, seeing as it is seemingly impossible to open a newspaper, look at a Facebook feed or watch a news bulletin without seeing a sprinkling of purple and yellow, but where we’ve gone wrong is that we haven’t been talking about UKIP in the right way. Up to now, we’ve been talking about the abhorrent views of UKIP members, the media obsession and pontificated and theorised on explanations for their popularity and support. What we’ve failed to spend enough time talking about is how we’re going to beat them.
