ACTIVISTS ANONYMOUS – CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

1

Introducing a new series, aiming to give an honest insight into the often-unspoken difficulties of being an activist. If you’d like to contribute to the series, email thenorwichradical@gmail.com with the subject line ‘Activists Anonymous’.

Engaging in activism is great. It’s a chance to help craft a better world, one small step at a time. We can gain life-long friends, develop important skills and learn more about the world. But like most things worth doing, it comes with its own problems.

Activism can be physically and emotionally draining. Failure can be frequent. Toxic practices and cultures can sometimes seep into how we operate. At worst, we can end up unwittingly emulating the very things we’re opposing.

It’s time we talked about all of this, openly and honestly.

This series aims to provide a space for activists to anonymously share their experiences and for us all to reflect on how these stories can help us craft better activist cultures. The aim is not for activists to have a pop at someone that’s annoyed them, or for us all to simply slip into mutually-reinforcing pessimism – the purpose of the series is to give a space to issues that are sometimes too awkward or difficult to discuss within activist networks and begin to flesh out ways forward.

So, come and share your negative activist experiences, and let’s think together about how we can fix them, how we can better support each other, and how we can be better at changing the world.

If you’d like to contribute to the series, email thenorwichradical@gmail.com with the subject line ‘Activists Anonymous’. Submissions should be between 400-1000 words long, and will be published anonymously. There are no other format restrictions – write up your experience however you like. This series was inspired by an article we published last year.
