IT’S WARM AND WE CARE

by Jake Reynolds

The city centre smells of McDonald’s
and SPF stands for exactly what you think

Lives play out on the water’s surface
to the sound of a distant harp

Love feels especially present —
everyone’s in a frenzy, declaring it freely

This is no time to be remorseful
The bees are back and we can start again

Touching is a syrup in the maudlin heat
but unbroken eye contact is everywhere

and poems can jangle like loose change

cowbells drifting through soupy air
