Original Italian by Anna Belozorovitch (Moscow, 1983 – ), ‘Il porto’ from Il Debito
The harbour breathes as everything changes;
it carries in its womb the still change,
the evolution to turmoil-based unexpectedness,
the summer heat. And it makes no sound
other than a tired chewing, which I hear
everywhere, in the air waving around
volumes of concrete and metal.
It mutters, the harbour, second-hand impressions;
blind, it only reflects the sentiment
of those who have been and seen.
Burning, it gives off heat of another’s lament;
dry, it reeks of thirst at first sight
even settled on that brackish taste
with its rigid lips jutting outwards.
