As we know the Tories’ so-called austerity has been an attack on the working class — the economics of class war if you like —but cuts in public sector jobs, benefits and social services have hit women particularly hard.
Women have found themselves having to fulfil new care responsibilities as public services continue to be dismantled. No wonder Anna Bird of the Fawcett Society commented, ‘Women have not faced a greater threat to their financial security and rights in living memory. Decades of steady, albeit slow, progress on equality for women is being dismantled, as cuts to women’s jobs and the benefits and services they rely on turn back time on women’s equality’. Cuts have also caused Women’s Refuges to close as two women a week continue to be killed by partners and ex partners.
Wondering how to respond to this structural (and other) misogyny? ROAR, in an attitude of solidarity (with victims of violence), resistance (to oppression) and celebration (of equality), has got together four ferocious, danceable female-fronted punk bands, plus solo artists, to raise money for Norwich’s local Women’s Refuge, Leeway.
Bands playing include Nottingham based metal tinged punks Radioactive Rats (who are gaining a reputation as a very good band indeed), excellent South London punks Mindframe, all girl H/C band Kill Bitches To Dress Foxes, and Norwich’s own Queer feminist flamenco Riot Grrrl cabaret Dandelion and the Rockets, as well as ace singer Hannah Tobias, plus Spu Terrible and Puka Percussion. This is set to be a night of ‘diverse feminist queer angry noisy kick-arse punk’.
The Owl Sanctuary, Norwich. 28/4/17. 7.30PM. See you there.
