I STAND UPON THE WATCHTOWER

by Jake Reynolds

after Harper Lee

It was February, it was cold, you’d come in
from break time and your fingers
would seize into a rigor mortis claw,
suggestions of a cold and who caught it
dribbled around the thin carpets
and the learning objectives
were objectively learned
by rote, the A-B-C of G-C-S-E
following acronyms, Harper Lee
as L-E-E, Learn Every Example
on the board this morning.
Pick up the battered paperback,
its various faded pencil notes
of gifts and tricks to work
and live by, lullabies underlined,
reaching inside, a spirit guide
in hiding, pushing out, and widening.
